Abstract

Purpose

There should be one standard for those with access to classified data. Leadership by example should be required by all managers, supervisors and department heads. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is a viewpoint and does not have a methodology.

Findings

Leaders who work in the public sector have an inherent responsibility to earn and maintain the trust of the public for whom they serve. Regardless of whether one is a career government employee, a politician or a political appointee, all who have access to classified material should respect the necessity of safeguards to keep one’s nation’s secrets – secret.

Research limitations/implications

If leaders fail to set the example, then nations risk further breaches of their classified information.

Practical implications

This viewpoint applies to anyone who works in an environment dealing with classified material.

Social implications

This viewpoint serves to educate the public on maintaining a single standard for those who handle classified material.

Originality/value

The author has yet to see much covered in peer-reviewed publications on this topic and believe that the subject is particularly relevant at this time.

Abstract

Purpose

World events underscore political challenges. Even with the relaxation of import/export impediments, the continuance of market globalization, the reduction of travel restriction among many countries combined with challenges throughout the globe that exist, the world appears to becoming an increasingly dangerous place. Heads of government and leaders throughout public sector organizations must have situational awareness of what is going on, not just within their own national boundaries, but what is taking place in the contiguous countries to their own and beyond. Decisions made regarding one issue could have profound secondary and tertiary effects on the situation abroad. This is particularly true when looking at countries as a primary unit of analysis in the context of international relations. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research methodology was used focussing on secondary data.

Findings

A public sector leader’s decisions can have a profound impact beyond that of one’s specific agency. When senior government leaders make decisions, they must consider the impact beyond that of their own organization.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focussed solely on secondary research sources.

Practical implications

This paper has implications for senior government leaders and military officers alike.

Social implications

When a leader makes a decision, he or she should look at the secondary and tertiary effects of their decisions so as to push for an utilitarian approach when solving problems.

Originality/value

The author believe that this is an original paper focussing on contemporary world events.

Abstract

During recent years, the use of plastic materials for the packaging of foods has been increasing fairly rapidly, but with the more recent expansion of self‐service stores, and of pre‐packaging in general, the employment of plastic compounds for the wrapping, storage, and handling of food has assumed a volume far greater than might have been anticipated but a short time ago. There are obvious advantages in these materials, particularly from the aspect of food hygiene, and they offer a range in properties that can suit the requirements of nearly all foodstuffs. While plastics normally consist mainly of synthetic resins and their derivatives, there are also present other substances such as plasticisers, lubricants, stabilisers, colouring matters and fillers; some of these other ingredients are or could be toxic in themselves, or they could contain metals or other substances known to be toxic or potentially toxic. Food in a plastic wrapper that includes in its ingredients a toxic substance is not going to do the consumer of the food any harm unless some of the toxic factor passes into the food, or into one of the ingredients of the food.

Abstract

In this chapter, we present a case study that explicates the work that two Black boys undergo to write their narratives despite the low expectations of their academic abilities espoused by their White teacher. Orienting ourselves within a critical race theory framework, we relied upon storytelling to tell the stories of John and Seth, two young Black boys whose science interests fueled their engagement across school subjects despite the semantic deficit-oriented positioning of their academic abilities by the White teachers and staff within their school. Throughout this chapter, we center their experiences to argue that understanding the inherent underrepresentation of Black men in science-based professions requires an examination of the pivotal educational moments preceding this disparity. Rich and culturally responsive science teaching may support equity for Black boys, but John and Seth's stories illustrate that these practices alone will only perpetuate the status quo unless teachers challenge their dispositions regarding who their students are and what they are capable of. We conclude by offering suggestions for practitioners to consider when designing and implementing equitable student-centered science instruction.

Abstract

What is it about academia anyway? We profess to hate it, spend endless amounts of time complaining about it, and yet we in academia will do practically anything to stay. The pay may be low, job security elusive, and in the end, it's not the glamorous work we envisioned it would be. Yet, it still holds fascination and interest for us. This is an article about American academic fiction. By academic fiction, I mean novels whosemain characters are professors, college students, and those individuals associated with academia. These works reveal many truths about the higher education experience not readily available elsewhere. We learn about ourselves and the university community in which we work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of a test artifact proposed by NIST to quantify the dimensional accuracy of a metal additive manufacturing process. Insights from this paper are given concerning both the performance of the machine, a concept laser Mlab cusing machine, and the applicability of the NIST test artifact in characterizing accuracy. Recommendations are given for improving the artifact and standardizing a process for evaluating dimensional accuracy across the additive manufacturing industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Three builds of the NIST additive manufacturing test artifact were fabricated in 316 stainless steel on a concept laser Mlab cusing machine. The paper follows the procedure described by NIST for characterizing dimensional accuracy of the additive process. Features including pins, holes and staircase flats of various sizes were measured using an optical measurement system, a touch probe and a profilometer.

Findings

This paper describes the accuracy of printed features’ size and position on the test artifact, as well as surface finish on flat and inclined surfaces. Trends in variation of these dimensions are identified, along with possible root causes and remedies. This paper also describes several strengths and weaknesses in the design of the test artifact and the proposed measurement strategy, with recommendations on how to improve and standardize the process.

Originality/value

This paper reviews a previously proposed design and process for measuring the capabilities of additive manufacturing processes. It also suggests improvements that can be incorporated into future designs and standardized across the industry.

Abstract

Since the first Volume of this Bibliography there has been an explosion of literature in all the main areas of business. The researcher and librarian have to be able to uncover specific articles devoted to certain topics. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume III, in addition to the annotated list of articles as the two previous volumes, contains further features to help the reader. Each entry within has been indexed according to the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus and thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid information retrieval. Each article has its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. The first Volume of the Bibliography covered seven journals published by MCB University Press. This Volume now indexes 25 journals, indicating the greater depth, coverage and expansion of the subject areas concerned.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a case study about how academic librarians can contribute to the interdisciplinary research endeavors of professors and students, especially doctoral candidates, through an intellectualized approach to collection development.

Design/methodology/approach

In the wake of protest movements such as the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street, colleges and universities have begun to develop courses about these events, and it is anticipated that there will be much research conducted about their respective histories. Academic librarians can participate in those research efforts by developing interdisciplinary collections about protest movements and by referring researchers to those collections.

Findings

Through a case‐study approach, this paper provides a narrative bibliography about Southern Agrarianism that can help professors and students interested in the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street movements to see their research endeavors from a new interdisciplinary perspective.

Originality/value

The value of this paper lies in presenting a concrete example of the way in which academic librarians can become active research partners through the work of building collections and recommending sources in areas that professors and students may not have previously considered.
